"Independent as a Hog on Ice"

This is the from the main MySpace "Description" for a band called Tusla. I discovered them through a promo email that was sent to me by Pirate! Brooke Black. It stood out because they offered a download of their new EP. That's definitely a great way for a promoter to get the word out on an artist. Just send me an email about a band with some "goodie" and I'm yours. :) Okay, just kidding, but it does increase your chances!

So this got me to their MySpace page, and I knew I liked already them by their "description"... :) It made me smile. So did their music (metaphorically)! I instantly downloaded their EP and I'm really enjoying it. Definitely a good kind of slow, distant rock. I'll let the experts explain it better below... This is directly from their email:

Tulsa is a Boston three-piece fronted by Park the Van solo artist and renowned producer Carter Tanton. The band will be touring in the new year (dates to follow) in support of their Park the Van debut and forthcoming full-length (out in '08). The band recently completed a Daytrotter session (airing in January) and were a SPIN.com Artist of the Day: http://www.spin.com/features/band_of_the_day/2007/10/071012_tulsa/. Tulsa also received praise from Pitchfork and Rolling Stone (see below).

"Tulsa has developed a strong and intriguing sonic character for its songs. Lead singer Carter Tanton has a spectacular voice, and he uses it to the fullest...His voice, as much as the songwriting, makes these songs memorable and gives them an ageless quality.. I look forward to their first full-length." - Pitchfork, 7.5 Review

"Singer-songwriter Carter Tanton examines loss and reunion with refreshing bounce. But his indie-seraphim voice is not of this world - set in the same alpine reverb where Jim James of My Morning Jacket lives - while the iridescent bloom of the guitars is a quality flashback to the clean-twang and country-fuzz blend of the 1968-69 Byrds." - David Fricke Rolling Stone "Fricke's Picks"

"there's something in me that's enthralled by discovery. Still, familiar sounds can still knock me out... meticulously put together, with acoustic and electric guitars colliding with roiling yet restrained drumming and backing vocals that seem to be calling from the great beyond. Carter Tanton has a firm grip on the structural basics of good songwriting, it proves to be a very effective instrument, articulating his haunting, pretty melodies with a mix of deft sharpness and a subtle gentleness." - Peter Margasak at the Chicago Reader

"the group captivated me from its first notes. Tulsa's core sound is alternative-country a la Wilco's "Being There," but this is enhanced with gorgeous Fender Rhodes keyboard and heavily echoed guitar reminiscent of Pink Floyd at its pro-"Dark Side of the Moon" trippiest, combined with effective harmony vocals throughout." - Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times

Upcoming Tulsa Shows:
Dec 22 Allston, MA - Great Scott
Dec 29 New London, CT - Oasis
