Brianna Lane (2/25/05)

As I often do, on Friday I scanned the performers playing at my favorite venues. The Barking Spider won out with Brianna Lane performing that night, along with Jim Volk. I didn't want to stay out late, so I was glad to see Brianna was performing first. I was there right at 8:30 to see them tuning. By the time 9:00 rolls around, I wonder how they could still be tuning. It was then I realize that Jim is actually the one doing tuning for his later show! I guess he's supposed to be good, but you wouldn't have known it by the smoothness of his soundcheck.

Brianna finally got started. She was sweet and charming, and just the person you would expect after looking at her website. She had a light and smokey-sweet voice. She almost sounded like Sarah McLachlan, if Sarah sang folk. She admits to playing sappy better than angsty, but I enjoyed everything she played. She even did an amazing cover of Foo Fighters "Learn to Fly." After she was done, I signed up on her mailing list, and I would have bought a CD had I been better prepared and stopped at the ATM. She is also requesting help with getting her new CD out if you can contribute!

Luckily I was out of there before Jim starting tuning again.
As I was leaving, I saw her Ford with Minnesota plates, just as she said you would see on her website. :)
