Griffin House (2/12/05)

So I can't believe I'm already falling behind on my blog. I find it funny that someone could fall behind blogging about shows they see, assuming that someone couldn't be seeing *that* many shows to fall behind on. I'm debating whether or not I see *that* many shows, or if I'm just lazy. Regardless, at least I'm catching up. I have a lot of upcoming shows and I'm anxious to write about them already (Steve Earle, Ani DiFrano, Andrew Bird, Erasure, Indigo Girls, etc.).

Two weeks ago I was in Columbus for the SchoolNet Conference and to visit my boyfriend. While there I had some free time on Saturday while DeVane was working, so what better way to fill free time than to see a show? Several days prior I had stumbled upon Griffin House coming to the Beachland. I checked him out and liked his music. At first I was relatively disappointed that I would be missing his appearance here in Cleveland until I realized that he was doing an early show at Little Brothers in Columbus wile I was there. This would work out perfectly! I have even been watching Little Brothers for a good show to see. (They get some good acts, I would suggest signing up on their listserve for updates).

I got there early, as it was an early show, but there were still people waiting outside. And those who know me know that I can find any reason to visit a record store, and this was one of those times. Just down the street is an amazing record store called Magnolia Thunderpussy . If find yourself in Columbus on High Street, you should visit.

I finally made it into Little Brothers and it wasn't quite what I expected, but it was still appropriate. The main stage area had a somewhat tall ceiling. The stage was up much higher than usual, seemingly lifting the musicians to dominion-like status over the tables and chairs in front of them. Opening was Trent Dabbs . He announced how his song had made it to the OC which was kinda lame, but for the most part, he had a solid set.

DeVane got off work and I ran to get him and brought him back for the Griffin House show. By this time I had lost my comfy seat along the side for standing room only. I found some cool things that I wanted to take pictures of, but I think I need some more training on my camera. My pics don't seem to be coming out as good as they should. Regardless, I'm still giving you what I got. If you have any suggestions, let me know ! I digress...

I guess I don't have much to say about Griffin House other than he seems like a nice guy and a hell of a good songwriter / performer for only starting at the age of 24. The best description I have for him is... if James Taylor and Bruce Springsteen had a gay love child - it would be Griffin House (Griffin, I hope if you're reading this you take that as a compliment). ;)

You can hear some additional tracks if you check out his site at MySpace.com
