Earlimart (5/5/05)

Earlimart was a band I discovered because of their connection to Interpol (one of the members of that band produced their newest Treble & Tremble release). I've enjoyed the album and was excited to see them perform at the Grog Shop. If you've never heard them, they kinda have the whole Death Cab for Cutie / The Postal Service sound.

I raced to this show after class, hoping to get there in time to catch them as the main act, but I actually got there early before any band had started. First up was Kevin Devine from Broolyn, NY (MySpace Site). He was good, sounding like John Mayer meets Counting Crows. As I was getting ready to snap my photo, I realized my camera battery was dead! Ugh. Thank god for my camera phone!! Not the greatest documentation of what would turn out to be an amazing night, but better than nothing.

Next up was Okkervil River. They got on stage asking for a drummer... I thought someone had volunteered from the audience, and I thought how cool would that be!? But it didn't pan out. These guys were okay live... They definitely needed that drummer and needed to lower their vocals. Their preview tracks on their website are decent, I guess they just need to work on their live shows (and make sure all their band members show up).

Enter Earlimart. They walked out on stage and filled it! In total they had 4 guitars, 2 keyboards, 2 drum sets, 1 trumpet and some great synthesizing. They were playing their heart out and having a party on stage! Members from the other band and Kevin kept jumping up on stage and jamming with the band. Watching them live definitely established them as a solid band in my eyes. Great presence and sound. And... I guess had no idea that the lead male was so damn cute!! They were definitely MUCH better than the Death Cab for Cutie show I saw at the Newport in Columbus, OH. And I was really surprised at the lack of people at the show that night, they definitely deserved a packed house!

Here is Earlimart's MySpace Link.
