Poison Control Center (3/27/05)

Another random arrival at the Barking Spider, another great random night. This night at the Tavern was essentially a reason to get out of the house, but the band Poison Control Center looked interesting too, so I went. Upon arrival, I saw one person that looked out of place, and sure enough it was Patrick who was was out touring solo in support of the full band. Before he performed, we sat at the bar and chatted a bit about things, particularly about live music, touring, and some of our favorite bands. He had suggested Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" album. Unfortunately it wasn't until writing this entry that I finally searched the album down to listen, but if it's as good as he says it is, I'm sure I'll be posting about it shortly.

It was time for Patrick to start playing, but it seemed the few there were not there to see him but in fact there to watch the Cavs. Patrick strummed along during the long strung-out ending of the game and then started jamming a ballad to Bri the bartender. Rather than opting for a microphone and amplification, Patrick just played to us, right there at the bar. Something I've never seen done before but I have to respect the person brave enough to play to the backs of 4 regulars focused on a game (and me with my notebook and camera).

Patrick was fun... he was loud, interactive, and did the splits! After the show we chatted a bit more and I grabbed some of his discs... It wasn't so much a certain CD for a price, but more of a "what do you want to spend" and he'll overload you with stuff.

The one album he gave me was "did they live happily ever after" and he told me about how he gathered a bunch of his female friends to record on a couple songs as a chorus and how well that turned out. I kind a forgot about it, but once I started listening to the CD I knew exactly what he was talking about. They added a great complement to a fun record. You can buy this record from PopGun Records for $2!

" presenting fourteen fabulous tunes in under 30 minutes, the poison control center make psychedelic-flavored indie pop that rocks like a humming bird in a plastic neon birdcage. melts in your head like icecream and pulls the corners of your mouth into a smile. straight outta iowa - from the heartland and straight into yer heart! for reals! "

Take a listen to "Grow Up and Marry Your Best Friend":
