Redheaded Stepchild (4/25/05)

How far behind am I? This night was I getting to see Red Headed Stepchild for a second night. I had seen them several weeks (months?) prior and was blown away. This night I was meeting my roommate John & some of his coworkers who were visiting from outside the US. He wanted to show them some local culture, outside of downtown. I think BST is the perfect place.

I got there before them and grabbed us a seat. I watched The Gist open. They were decent, but pretty typical... they were missing something on stage. I think part of it might have been the over-comedic bass player, jumping in at inappropriate times and upstaging the lead singer. I was thinking when writing this entry that I do hate to be negative about bands and maybe I shouldn't be mentioning them at all... but then I did remember the best part of the band... the drummer was hot!

John & co-workers got there just in time for the main act. The best overall description I can give to the presence of Redheaded Stepchild is that they seem like two hippies emerging from a smoke-laden VW van. I hope you read the respect and admiration I have with that description. ;) They are pretty quiet setting up, and I had a chance to ask Kathryn if it were okay to take pictures. Once they get on stage and Kathryn Koch stands back from the microphone and belts it out. If Janis Joplin sang folk music, this is what it would sound like. She has such a passion on stage and you get the distinct impression that she is holding something back, that she could rock an amphiteather with her presence.

Not only playing guitar, she'll whip out a saxophone or a harmonica at any moment. Now I'm not a fan of saxophone in any kind of music (ironic since that's the only instrument I ever learned) but she pulls it off wonderfully.

Check out some audio samples on CDBaby.com.

Redheaded Stepchild will be coming back to the Barking Spider Tavern on Monday, June 13th at 10:00pm. Go.
