Amanda's Crying Problem (3/14/05)

It's actually more than Amanda's Crying Problem, its also Ian's and Penny's (and even Amanda's brother). Admittedly, Amanda is a friend of mine who I've seen several times at the Spider, but this time they were a booked act rather than performing at open mic night. This was also the first time I've seen my other friend Penny on stage. Penny was on drums, Ian on guitar, and Amanda was on piano and violin. As they got started, Amanda anounced that they were looking for a new name. Paper was passed around to submit ideas and what a range they covered. I wish I would have kept better track of some of the ridiculousness, but I remember my favorite being "Dirty Compromise" submitted by Penny's partner Lauren.

The place was packed! I was so happy for them. I was particularly surprised by the number of videocameras I saw there. Why don't I have one!? Anyway, the music that night was great. Unfortunately, I am one of the worst people to remember the name and artist of an older song, or even recognize the fact that the song is even a cover unless it's been released in the last two decades. Luckily my friend Leo was there to help, he's much better at it than I. Here's just a quick recap of some of the stuff we heard:

- Joni Mitchell / Chelsea Morning
- Bee Gees / How Deep is Your Love
- Dolly Parton / Jolene
- Simon & Garfunkel / America
- Pink Floyd / St. Tropez
- Joni Mitchell / Blue
- Tears for Fears / Mad World

UPDATE: Ian sent me an MP3 (Drowsy Maggie) to post for your listening pleasure:

Joni being covered twice was quite appropriate, I would listen to Amanda sing Joni anytime. My only constructive comment for the entire performance would be for Amanda to have a bit more confidence with her voice. She definitely has the talent, the presence, and the voice... she just needs to show it.

Be sure to check them out again at the Barking Spider Tavern on Saturday, April 16th! They are performing as Ian & Amanda, but I believe Penny will be there as well. (Unfortunately that night, I already have tickets for the Iron & Wine show at the Grog Shop.)
