Silversun Pickups & Seawolf (8/7/2007)

So it's a dark time for this blog. Not that it's coming to an end or anything, but after first losing my camera in a cab in Chicago, I also lost my Moleskine notebook where I keep all my concert notes. This was the show where it disappeared. It's depressing because it had nearly 2 years of notes in it, Amy Ray's autograph, and other bits of interest. It also had my contact information in it, so I'm still hoping it'll appear... someday.

In the meantime, I guess I put it out of my mind and forgot to write about this show. Not realizing it until just now, as I sit down to write about the Dar Williams show from this past weekend. Oh well.

For this show, the big draw was the opening act, Sea Wolf. I didn't even have a full album from them yet (they hadn't recorded it yet), but the few MP3's I've downloaded already had me hooked, including their Daytrotter session. In prepping for the show, I also downloaded some Silversun Pickups and liked them enough to warrant the ticket price and a mid-week excursion.

The show was in the smaller Ballroom of the Agora and was quite full. Sea Wolf came on and played an amazing set, kind of reminding me of a mix between Arcade Fire & Bruce Springsteen. They also filled the stage with 6 band members, something I wasn't expecting. I think my only complaints for this show was the poor vocal sound quality and the short set. Luckily, Sea Wolf is coming back to the Grog Shop on Saturday, November 10th.

I didn't stay for much of Silversun Pickups. While I liked their album, their live show was a little more "shouty" and I had to work the next morning. And to use another band mash-up, I'd say they sounded like Death Cab for Cutie if Billy Corgan took the helm. Maybe I'll see them again, if they open up for someone else.

Here's a Scene Article about them.
