Josh Groban (2/19/07)

As you could probably imagine, Josh Groban would not be high up on my concert-going schedule... however it was a Christmas gift to my Mom from my Sister and I. And what a great gift it ended up being.

We decide we would go all out and the the most expensive tickets - that way we could be on the floor to see him, instead of the north 40 like we were for Coldplay. We were online and ready to buy tickets the second they went on pre-sale, armed with our Ticketmaster pre-sale password. As the "gates" opened, we were quickly navigating their website going for the best seats... but we were quickly met with some of the worst seats in the house! Time and time again... We started to get frustrated and my Sister had the great idea to look for one of the other possible pre-sale passwords. She found one at the Josh Groban website and that got us on the floor... whew! (Another reason to hate Ticketmaster)

We got there in plenty of time and watched the opener, Angelique Kidjo. I was somewhat excited to see her, hearing her name before and having some kind of recognition with her. She was definitely talented, but I was a little disappointed in the overall experience. I kind of felt like she was trying to be a world-music Yanni... though I bet they could have rocked a small dive club in a more intimate atmosphere.

The best I could describe Josh would be as a Popera Superstar! I couldn't believe how packed the Q was, and the diversity of the crowd there to see him. I have to admit that I didn't really become too familiar with his music prior to the show. Not that it's necessarily bad - just not my style. Kind of like Harry Connick Jr., I kinda like him, but I just never find myself in the mood for his music. Still, this night was about our Mom and I was glad to see she was having such a great time! Josh was very personable, charming, and grateful. And of course he's got a great voice. I think the highlight for me was when he admitted to starting out as a Musical Theatre geek and was rather surprised (and grateful) to be where he's at.

I can say that if my Mom wanted to see him again, I'd go.

UPDATE: Here's an article about the show from the Plain Dealer: Groban goes for broke, dazzling fans of all ages
