Concert Catch-up (12/14/05 - 1/20/06) 4 Shows

Catherine Feeny (12/14/06)

Catherine Feeny has a quiet, whispery voice and a great website. Unfortunately I don't think I have much more to say about this show than that. She did do a sweet cover of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire" and Joni Mitchell's "River" (who she also states as an influence). Though with a lack-luster show like this, I found myself postulating why I still enjoy seeing live music so much. The result... I think it's just having a deep respect for people to get up and perform in front of others, especially when you're performing at a venue with only 3 people who don't care whether you're there or not. It's a tough gig, but I respect those who do it.

Yay! 2006!! (...finally)

Slackjaw (1/7/2006)

Another good Slackjaw set. Though on this night the were asking the audience for a possible new name for a new project. Names thrown out were "Beaver Karma" "Boob, Sweat & Tears" and many other entertaining ones. They were also taking a vote on which song would be played at the 30th Annual Women's Variety Show. My favorite song of theirs "No Body's Wife" took the prize. After the show I got to talk with Kate (?) for a bit. I asked about the variety show, and of course when anything is labeled as "Women's" and involves music, I already know I'd love to go. However, just as with every other Women's event, it was women-only (understandably enough - it doesn't hurt to ask).

We Are Scientists (1/7/2006)

This was another double-header night. After leaving the Spider, I headed over to the Grog Shop to see We Are Scientists. Unfortunately from the earlier show, I had already realized I forgot my camera, and my Treo battery was dead... So no photos. I also didn't have a chance to even write anything down about the show... So a "they were great" is about as good as it gets. I'd definitely recommend checking them out. Their album has since become one of my favorites this year.

Loudon Wainwright (1/20/2006)

Having a friend work for WKSU has it's perks. My friend Tim was able to score 2nd row seats at the Kent Stage for the Loudon Wainwright show. Let me first start by complimenting the venue... they had leg room! Usually any seated event is dreadful for my 6'4" height, but this night was particularly comfortable. Opening was Dick Siegle (w/ Paul Kovak). The performance was great, his performance reminding me of Lou Reed meets Dan Bern.

Loudon was a lot of fun, and what a smart-ass he is. He's one of the few artists I know who can sing songs of death and decay with a sense of humor. He also can effortlessly go from playing music that will break your heart to potty humor that'll make you bust a gut. I couldn't imagine Martha or Rufus growing up with him as a father. Here's one of my favorite songs that he performed:

"White Winos"
