Jess Klein & Ana Egge (7/6/05)

I didn't have a lot of expectations for this show, but two female singer/songwriters at the Beachland Tavern will draw me anytime. I had listened a little bit to Jess and Ana on their websites and was fairly excited to go.

This was also DeVane's first time going to the Tavern. I wanted to make an event out of it, so we got to the area early and patronized the Music Saves CD store next door. I was able to pick up the Scissor Sisters DVD for only $9! Anyway, once they opened the Tavern and ordered from their kick-ass menu (not extensive, but great food).

Ana Egge was good. Not a whole lot to say about her because she didn't really strike a cord with me, but I would go see her again.

Next Jess Klein walked out on stage. She was not at all what I was expecting. Very small, statuesque, and younger than I thought she would be. I would venture to say reminded me of a young Ani.

She had an amazing voice and her songs were beautiful, long and complex... the kind of just swept over you. She had a great stage presence as well... The way that she worked the beginning of a song, moving her body and building up momentum until she lets into it. Almost as if she works herself into a zone.

I definitely think she could be a modern day Joan Baez / Joni Mitchell (with a heavy Ani influence). Definitely one of the best shows I've seen in the Tavern.

Be sure to check out the rest of the pictures at my Flickr page.
