The Futureheads (6/9/05)

Barely coming down from my high seeing Martha Wainwright, two days later I got to see The Futureheads at the Grog Shop. You may remember them from a previous post. A couple bands opened for them, but you know, they really weren't worth writing about. Basic, kind-of-dull rock... especially when you're opening for a band as dynamic as The Futureheads.

The Futureheads had a huge light show setup crowding the stage, probably pulling more power than the sound. It was not a show for the epileptic. But the lights really fit well with the band and the music and made the show.

Another interesting point about that night was the number of people with cameras, I've never seen so many people taking pictures at a show! Are they just capturing this moment for their own personal memories, or is someone else in Cleveland blogging this? I just had to get a pic.

The Futureheads have been enjoying some well-deserved success with this album, and they definitely had a air of arrogance on stage. Nothing too much, just enough to give them some umph on stage. But this also didn't mesh so well with the crowd.

I love the Grog as a venue, but it really draws a lot of drunk people who aren't really into the music. That works with a lot of the hard-rock, never-stop, bands. But on this night, with a band that is known for their harmonizing acapella, it was kind of a challenge for the audience to be quite. In fact, I don't even think they tried. The Futureheads weren't having it though. I was recording one of my favorite songs on the new album when I got to catch them telling the audience to shut up, but integrated it with the song. Great stuff (the audience deserved it).

Overall the show was amazing and the Grog was the place to see them. Getting to stand so close, it was an assault on your senses.
