Mercy Creek & Emmet (2/16/05)

So I'll often just randomly walk into the Barking Spider Tavern to see who's playing and to enjoy an Ayinger ... often after sitting at Arabica doing school work or something else. Most often something else. I often walk into a performance that is so good, it should be put on a much bigger stage with a much bigger audience, however I'm kind of glad they're not.

This past Wednesday was no different. Opening was Mercy Creek. These guys knew what they were doing. The lead singer was a girl with a guitar, and a kick-ass voice (if only I were straight). With her was a guy on drums, but a set of drums consisting of a single snare drum connected to several different size Djembes. They were GREAT. She reminded me of a cross between Laura Love (vocal elements), Joan Osborne (vocal power & blues influence) and Lucinda Williams (the country / Nashville feel). They classified themselves as "agressive folk rock / earthy edgy music" and I would agree. Go see them!

Afterward they greeted an excited audience and signed people up on their listserv. I bought a CD (of course) and signed up on their mailing list. I even introduced this blog to her, asking if it was okay to post pictures. She was flattered. I was excited to talk about it!! Afterward they sat at the table and chilled with some of the patrons. This is what live music should be about.

Next up was Emmet , a group of young guys in their 20's. They challenged the small performance space, filling it with 6 guys, 5 guitars, 2 keybards, 1 xylophone, and a harmonica. Very talented group of guys. Their talent is what sustained me, however I didn't stay the whole night. They were good enough to see, but I wouldn't miss Mercy Creek to see them!
