Bitch (4/2/05)

Since Ani started her label Righteous Babe Records, it has allowed me to discover a lot of phenomenal artists. The first of which was Bitch & Animal. They had released a prior album on their own label, and their sophomore effort Eternally Hard was released on RBR, produced partially by Ani (who also provides guest vocals). I first saw them open for Ani at the State Theater, then several times after in the Beachland Tavern and at Union Station / Bounce. They had me hooked with their lyrical and musical style.

For me, Bitch showed herself to be the leading force behind the duo, and it was only appropriate that Bitch would continue on her own. Here she was playing at Bounce nightclub club again, but this time in the club instead of the parking lot. I got there early and hung with Eve & Stephanie and their friends. We got a great seat at the show, though I suppose it's tough to have a tough seat there. Once they got started, it was easy to see that sound was definitely an issue. Bounce was not a great venue choice. She continued and put on a great show. She was accompanied by Liz the drummer and Little Prince on keyboards (I'm not sure if the look preceded the name, or just the opposite, but the two fit perfectly).

Bitch is an artistic force to be reckoned with. She plays the guitar, bass, ukulele, and the electric fiddle. She drifts effortlessly between poetry, prose and song, and has a passion that would scare any conservative, middle-aged white man. Even with the poor quality of the production, she charmed me with her ability to evoke emotion with effortless craftwomanship (just in case she's reading). ;)
