NewNowNext (7/9/07)

LOGO's NewNowNext Review...

This week's list . Watch all videos here. (PC Only).

This week the interviewee was Kinnie Starr. She didn't end up with any videos on this episode, but she's worth listening to... talking about being Canadian, of native origin, bisexual, and a hip-hop artist.

Rihanna - Shut Up and Drive

This definitely isn't the jam that Umbrella is, but not as bad as some of the other stuff out there right now. She's definitely sexing up in this video, and adding a nice rock element. Worthy of being shown.

Donnie - If I Were You

I first heard of Donnie on the NewNowNext blog. I was excited to see a black male R&B artist being promoted on a gay website while being compared to Stevie Wonder. But in the interview Donnie does some random talking about the state of homosexuality, sounding elusive and negative. But he's performing at L.A. Pride. Not sure what that means, but I left the interview with a bad taste in my mouth. But the song's not bad.

M.I.A. - Boyz

This video premiered several months ago. After all the buzz over her last album, I had big hopes for this one. This single (or video) didn't do much for me... And avoid this video or her MySpace page if you have any problems with epilepsy. :)

Fallout Boy - The Takeover, The Breakover

I can't help but have a soft spot for the eyeliner-wearing Peter Wentz, though I won't go out and buy the album. This video addresses their being criticized for selling out, though I don't think it would really change any minds. I'll still share the video (more slim pickin's this week). It's almost worth the last 3 seconds where the dog wakes up on Peter's stomach.

Muse - Supermassive Black Hole

Who makes these videos?? I just can't image the pitch for making something like this... "Kind of nightmarish, with creepy full body suits." But they have one of the most well designed MySpace pages I've seen.

Levi Kreis - We're Okay

Okay, so the song is not as bad the second time around (the video is), but I still wouldn't recommend it.

Rufus Wainwright - Rules & Regulations

Worthy of a re-run.

Of Montreal - Suffer Fashion

I was hoping to see these guys at Pitchfork, but they're not playing until the end of the day on Sunday. :( So I'm not getting to excited about this song... but I'll still share you the video.

Interpol - Heinrich Maneuver

Repeat.

Josh Zuckerman - Something Inside

Another unfortunate repeat.

NewNowNext (7/1/07)

LOGO's NewNowNext Review...

This week's list . A little disappointing this week. Not much new noteworthy stuff, and some poor choices of repeats.

Rufus Wainwright - Rules and Regulations

I haven't been spending as much time with the new Rufus album as I would have expected. But from what I know of it, this is one of my least favorite tracks. It's a little slow and drab, which Rufus usually pulls off flawlessly. But as with most of his albums, there's an incubation period until I really start to like it. I'm only posting this video because it's the only other decent one worth showing. :)

Gym Class Heroes - Clothes Off

Eh. I really liked their previous track, Cupid's Chokehold... This song sampling "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off' is a relatively fun, but what's with the furries (NSFW)? :)

Kanye West - Stronger

Eh. C'mon LOGO, let's get with some of the better, non-Top 40 stuff.

Fujiya & Miyagi - Ankle Injuries

Now this was more like it. This is one of D's favorite songs, though it's different than the version we've been listening to. I'll have to see what the difference is. These guys will be coming to Cleveland on the Thursday before we travel to Chicago to see them as part of the Pitchfork Music Festival.

Josh Zuckerman - Something Inside

Josh was the in-between interviewee on this episode. I knew I wouldn't like him early on, when he said he likes listening to "what's out there... like Sheryl Crow, Tim McGraw, and Bon Jovi." Danger. And this video and song was actually worse than I expected. D asked how many people he had to blow to get this video on air.

Interpol - The Heinrich Maneuver

Having seen them in concert, and really enjoying it, I had high expectations for this new song. But at first experience, I'm have to say I'm not impressed. Maybe it's because it's been 3 years since their last release, and it's their first album on a major label. But I'll wait to hold ultimate judgement until I hear the whole album.

The Noisettes - Scratch Your Name

I've heard two references to the Noisettes having a hot lead woman. I think this may be all they have going for them.

Hilary Duff - Stranger

Repeat from 2 weeks ago (shouldn't have been).

The Automatic Automatic - Monster

Repeat from 3 weeks ago. This song/video is looking much more appealing after some of the crap they showed this week. :)

Mark Ronson - Stop Me

Repeat from last week.

NewNowNext (6/24/07)

LOGO's NewNowNext Review...

This week's list .

Justin Timberlake - LoveStoned / I Think She Knows Interlude

Wow, this album of his keeps turning out the hits. This isn't quite the great video that My Love was, but still worthy of the song, and worthy of watching.

Mark Ronson feat. Daniel Merriweather - Stop Me (domestic)

I've been hearing a lot about this Mark Ronson album, and who wouldn't with such a line-up of guest artists (Robbie Williams, Lilly Allen, Amy Winehouse, etc.). I'm not a huge fan of the album, or this song (even though it is a cover of a Smith's song). I also had to look up Daniel Merriweather, who turns out to be an R&B singer from Melbourne, Australia.

Levi Kreis - We're Okay

So it's another low-budget, mediocre gay song/video. I'm trying to be open to some of these artists who sing "gay" songs, but so many are disappointing. So is this.

Placebo - Running Up That Hill

The video jumped out at me more than the song did, and for good reason. Here's the NNN description:
British band Placebo does a somber take on this '80s song by Kate Bush. For the video, Placebo compiled movies of fans singing the song themselves.

Also, kudos to them for taking a stand.

Menomena - Rotten Hell

I started checking these guys out a couple weeks ago because I'll be seeing them at the Pitchfork Music Festival... Then this video got posted at Stereogum with the perfect description: "300 with food and kids instead of pecs and quads."

Modest Mouse - We've Got Everything

A repeat from last week.

Katastrophe - The Life

Another repeat. This one I liked enough to watch again.

Melange - Gay Bash

A nice surprise. A solid rap track with a decent video... Love rap with a good message.

Kennedy - Your Mama

A video that shouldn't have been repeated. :)

Zac Efron - Ladie's Choice

I was a little excited to see this video after all the swooning I hear over Zac and his role in High School Musical. So my DVR cut out before playing this video, so I found it on YouTube. I don't get the whole 50's dance thing.. then again I haven't seen High School Musical or any of that. I guess I just don't understand these kids now-a-days.

NewNowNext (6/18/07)

Here's the 3rd Installment of LOGO's NewNowNext Review...

This week's list.

Bloc Party - The Prayer

This album wasn't quite as good as I hoped, but it's still worth listening... The song has a slow, stark beginning but then picks up when the dance piece comes in. At that point is when I feel like I'm watching it on acid, or that's what it would feel like being on an acid trip.

Lilly Allen - LDN

Eh, I like Lilly's sound... I wouldn't turn it if it were on the radio. She's been getting more hype than I would expect, but then again, that may be more for her lifestyle.

Patrick Wolf - Accidents & Emergency

This has become one of my new favorite songs. You really need to get this song, and while you're at it, watch the video.

Kirsten Price - Magic Tree

Kristen was this week's interviewee. Ugh, she was obnoxious. She sounded so self-important when talking about her and her art. Her video was horrible as well (not an L Word fan, surprisingly enough).

White Stripes - Icky Thump

I got to see this video a couple weeks ago and was intrigued by the use of Spanish subtitles. For a second I thought D could use it in his Spanish class, but then realized the subject matter (prostitution) wouldn't be appropriate. Not a huge fan of the song or video.

Hilary Duff - Stranger

Blech. (boy is hot)

Kennedy - Your Mama

I guess this video is trying to be cheeky, with a dorky guy singing to a bunch of kinds how he's the one loving their mother. It really falls short. I couldn't even finish it.

The Pipettes - Your Kisses are Wasted on Me

I heard somewhere that The Pipette girls are a nerd's wet dream. They're hot, fun, and cheeky (dare I use that again). They may be great in concert, but the video's a little dull.

As Tall As Lions - Love Love Love

Not worth it. (boy these are getting short)

KT Tunstall - Other Side of the World

KT's cool. I can respect her. She's got a hot love interest, and an interesting video to boot.

NewNowNext (6/10/07)

Here's the 2nd Installment of LOGO's NewNowNext Review...

This week's list.

Justice - D.A.N.C.E
A welcomed repeat, and worthy of kicking-off this week's episode. Check out the video on Last Week's review.

Apples in Stereo - Can You Feel It.
Yay! A great band, a great song... though an average video. Check out my entry on seeing them at the Grog Shop.

The Automatic Automatic - Monster
Haven't heard of these guys, but it's an entertaining video.

Katastrophe - The Life
I truly enjoy the interviews in-between videos and this week's interviews have been with Katastrophe. Getting the background and some context about the artist and their music gives me more respect for them. For Katastrophe I have have much more respect for him being both transgender and as a rapper.

Modest Mouse - We've Got Everything
Not one of my favorite songs from the album and the video is kinda blah... But it's not going to stop me from seeing them in concert.

Peter Bjorn & John - Young Folks
I've been hearing a lot about these guys lately... a favorite of some of my friends. Though it's one of the artists/albums that have eluded my iTunes. Hearing this again and seeing the video, I'm going to have to check these guys out.

The Kooks - Naive
This is the first time I've heard this song, but D was able to sing it word for word! Turns out he got it on some sampler and has been listening to it a lot. What is it about Brit pop music that's so damn catchy?

!!! - Must Be The Moon
My friend Sarah turned me onto these guys on their last album. Some of the tracks I really liked, some I didn't know what the hell was going on. As for this video... it's a little crazy for my taste, but I have to respect their creativity.

Mute Math - Typical
There's something about videos in reverse that are captivating, though the song doesn't quite do the same. Not horrible.

Feist - 1234
I was very excited to see this video made the show. I saw it on YouTube as soon as it came out... A pretty amazing video if it is continually shot (as it looks). And by far one of my favorite new albums.

NewNowNext (6/3/07)

This begins a new series that I've been wanting to do for a while... One of my (only?) favorite music shows on television is LOGO's NewNowNext. If you don't watch it, you should. (I'm a huge fan of the NewNowNext blog as well, so make sure to throw it in your RSS readers.) It's a music program that has videos from all genres of music, but distilled for a dare-I-say gay crowd. Then there are interviews with gay artists in between videos. Well executed.

If you miss an episode, want a review, or just like my commentary :) then you're in the right spot.

This weeks Episode List. You can also watch all the videos here as well (PC only... c'mon LOGO!).

Amy Winehouse - Rehab
I'm sure you've already heard all about Amy. It's a great video and decent song... Can't believe the how different she looks all "made up" on video than on the candid photos on Perez. She's got this dramatic presence that translates to strange in real life.

Patrick Wolf - Accidents & Emergency
I've seen his name around and I really liked the song and the video. A deep rich voice on a eclectic, flamboyant guy. Worth checking out.

Guy B - Within Me
So not ALL the videos are good... This one sucked. Some hot guy singing a horrible song. Gives "gay music" a bad name. :)

Eve - Tambourine
It's Eve... not bad if you dig 'er.

Justice - D.A.N.C.E.
Great upbeat song... It'll definitely make your summer mix playlist. I highly recommend watching this video too.

Adam Barta - I Wanna Hold You
Another ultra-gay video. Well, I guess you could call it "bi" because he's with a girl and a guy in the video... I'd dance to it (if intoxicated).

The Cinematics - Keep Forgetting
I downloaded this album because these guys came to Cleveland to open for The Bravery (which I missed this time around). Not a big fan of the album, but I'd highly recommend checking out The Trouble Is:

Chris Garneau - Relief
It's videos / artists like this that make me love NewNowNext. Look below and you'll see me gushing about his recent show at the Beachland. A phenomenal artist with a video worth re-posting:

Jarvis Cocker - Don't Let Him Waste Your Time
Very fun video. He definitely reminds me of a current day Elvis Costello, but a little more light-hearted.

Kevin Cahoon - Fashionista
Um... While this video shows a skinny gay guy (Kevin) singing and dancing all over NYC, the song can't help but take me back to the 80's hair metal days... Not a horrible thing.
